BMW 325i E30 vemsed and now turbo
« on: April 08, 2008, 07:13:59 pm »
Quote from: Gunni
Well I couldn´t stand it any more having no car in this country so I decided on buying a e30..

Car in question is a 325i 4door, zinnobar red.
I´ve since fitted 318is interior, center console and so on, is lip,
need some spacers for the wheels to push them out a bit.

This will be the engine setup
Engine :
MLS gasket
ARP bolts
TCD exhaust manifold
T4 TCD turbo
Poly motor bushings.
42lbs injectors
final goal 400-450whp should get there at 20-25psi
(200whp by end of spring with turbo)
All controlled by VEMS.

Plan is to build the car so that when looked at it will look like it is now,
but when the throttle is opened it turns into a WEAPON.

Luxury?
Sure electric windows and rears as well, electric sunroof.
remote central locking

Car should be ready by end of spring 2009.
More info to follow as they progress

Been driving around for a while and working on the starting,
it seems no prime and no added fuel at 77C+ is working well, as before it has
been drinking fuel alot, I blame it mostly on the constant starting and running rich
from overfuelling because of the high afterstart enrichment and warmup.
So I´ll see if my new changes make a difference.

I made a adapter for it but have since revised it on another car I have also installed it on.
mainly how the injectors are wired, I made a new injector harness for mine, while I just tapped into the wires at the injectors for the other car. it makes for alot cleaner install,
Drivability is excellent to say the least and performs about the same as the chip I had in it.

It´s got a headgasket issue I´m solving next weekend.

Update.

Engine got flushed pretty heavily on the #4 with fuel when I was messing with IAC valve setup
(ran one icv circuit out on a already connected injector, so that cyl was trying to digest 450cc injection at 100% duty
at idle  :P )
and since then it´s pumping so much into the crankcase it´s leaking around the headgasket oil return, so I´ve disabled that cylender within VEMS.
and it´s only running on 5 now until I fit another engine and no more leaking.

I never have gotten around to finish the iac so I messed with ignition based idle control and
holy smoke it´s good. Idle is dead stable at 900rpm at the moment, advance is 5-6deg when it was 22 before,
at 22° it´s idling around 1500-1600rpm which I like when it´s cold.

So I have effectively given my self two extra INJFET outputs instead of wasting them on the idle valve.
I also had a very good running engine lamdba vise so I disabled that as well as otherwise it´s looking at 3cyls and only 2 are burning air,
And would start messing things for those two.

I´ve already bought another engine and will be fitting that soon enough, it´s got slightly higher compression so it´s all good.
An then I´ll be fitting the turbo next winter, can´t be bothered with it now as I´m moving back in just over a month.

Ok finally got some time to do some work on it.

sorted all fuelling during cruise.
cold start is almost done,
idle is rock awesome now without using a ICV.
accelaration enrichment is good, only need to fix the instant WOT condition but that varies to much with
rpm´s

I´ll post up some VEMS screenshots later.

Can you post up or explain in details about setting the ignition idle control? :)

Dyno time.

This engine is 22years old and the head has never come off.
I´m doing a compression test tomorrow to see what the condition is.

I´d say it´s pretty good compared to stock 171hp and 165lbs torque

update.

turns out the old block had early pistons so it was a high compression one ,
no wonder it was so nice.

anyway.

update #1.
compression test after dyno runs shows weak #6 cyl (8bar) while all the other ones where 12-13bar

update #2.

turbo is in the works.

Stage III from TCD ( T40E 60trim ) and TCD top mount manifold

I´m going to be running 1bar on a M20B28
M52 crank
M20B20 rods
M20B25 pistons (late)
ARP headbolts
Stage III TCD/UUC clutch kit (450lbs + )
TIAL 38mm
TIAL BOV
Well sized intercooler
42lb injectors
VEMS
"3 downpipe, exhaust and inline silencers.

Compression is 9.16:1 which will suit perfect for the level of boost and normal in town driving.

HP shall be 400hp and torque 400lbs
full boost by 3k in the last 3 gears, probably slightly later in the first two.

Some pics from the block work
this is a E34 block so I´m going to be drilling for the dipstick.

I´m also working on making the TCD manifold + TCD turbo work without an adapter to fit RHD vehicles. It´s very close :)

here are a few from when I was working on the first head.

We do what then??

 8)
After a quick look at the ports and comparison to the burn pattern on the outside of the exhaust ports they are a very solid source of more air flow. As per alpinas own modifications.
No mods will be done to this 2.8 port wise.

Nice!  Do you have photos of the placement and tubing of the intercooler?

I'm planning to do the same thing but with a 3.5L M30 (your sound advice btw ;D).

This is where my E30 325i is at the moment.
I´m picking up a 2,8 crank on sunday to finish the 2,8 M20 build

Engine has been honed, 2,8 crank, 320i rods and 325i pistons are all in.

Engine is also now in the car , will be starting soon.

Still missing a spacer on the front of the crankshaft as you can see basically just seals against the seal.

Hello gunni,

nice project, how many HP that you mean have the engine?

The ignition coil is very near at the exhaust manifold  :o

Is the crank fine balance and how many rpm that would like?

I haven´t tuned it yet.
but it´s going to make however much is possible by the 450cc injectors.

The coil only seems to be that close.

The crank came straigth out of a E36 328i engine and has been checked. the crank would rev to 8k if wanted but the m20 valvetrain will not allow that.
