K1275RS Classic Mini 1275 16v
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:45:11 pm »
Well I have now started this progect in earnest. I originaly started this almost exactly two years ago, before I even had a car to put it in,LOL.

What is this all about?

Well this is something I have been thinking about since I first read an article in Car Car Conversions magazine back in 1996, and again later that year in CCC's sister Magazine Miniworld, where Bruno Rouille, a french engineering studant working for Southern Carburetors, had mated a BMW K100RS twin cam 16v head to an A series Mini engine. Very interesting read. At that time I didnt have anywhere near the money to even consider tuning a standard motor, so it was just a dream. It wasnt untill recently and the wealth of information on the internet that i found a web site by a chap in America who had actualy done a very similar conversion back in 1989 with the BMW K100 twin cam 8valve head http://www.users.qwest.net/%7Eshuko/

I was talking to one the guys at work who is biker and said that he had a BMW K100. It didnt take long for me to work out what i was looking for with his help and in march 2005 I bought a complete 1992 K100RS engine with only 38k on the clock. Its been since then that i have spent the time researching and developing the dry belt drive set up converting both the engine and head from a wet chain drive

I had always considered a turbo on this conversion even in 1996, it seemed logical, the inlets were at the front, the exhausts where at the back and there would a huge space where the carb used to be. During my research I came across an Auzzie who was also doing this 16v turbo conversion Mad Matt is his alias :D for good reason :D http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/TheMiniMan/page2.html.

It wasnt untill mid last year that Matt managed to get his running normally aspirated, then soon after John Kimmens of http://www.specialist-components.com/cnb/shop/sconline?op=merchant-welcome-null It wasnt untill July and the weekend of the British Mini Showdown at Avon Park Race Way Long Marston, Stratford Upon Avon, held every year, that Jim Lyons of http://www.sheepspeed.com finaly got his 16vturbo, the first ever of its kind in the history of the Mini or The A series, running on race day, with help from myself and many others, even if it was just tech info ;D. Witnessed by many and unchalenged by anyone to his claim, it still stands as the first ever. He did suffer from some inherant build issues that could not be overcome on the week end to get the mapping some where near and allow one run down the strip. None the less, history had been set. Future mapping on Emeralds rollers by Dave Walker showd 200+bhp ant 170lbft+ at 6500rpm and with a runaway boost pressure of 21 psi. More issues to overcome. Jim is keeping his hat on as to the final figures he achieved.

Now over to me and what has happened so far, well cut an even longer story short, I habe been mocking up the engine in the garage. I have a complete front end off a scrap mini, front end cut off with a subframe and engine sat in it. Some may think Im daft but i still want to use the mini, and it enables me to work on the project in a realistic situation into the wee small hours of the morning :-\ . Ive got rads, intercoolers, oil coolers, inlet plenums, turbos, filters, water pumps and all associated pipework to squeeze under a standard round nose front end. Of which, the FG front end is on order.

I finished prepping the block at the week end, that is ready. I need to work out the valve cuts in the pistons now and get them machined, im waiting on the Total Seal piston rings and I still need the welding on the head to be done as well as find some one to make me an exhaust manifold in 321 stainless :-\

VEMS is ofcourse the engine Management of choice ;D

Other than that, im skint. Steel flywheels, straight cut gears and cross pinion diffs are not cheap.

I think this engine is gonna break the bank never mind the gearbox ::)

Well how about that. I used to work with Bruno at Cosworth. I knew he'd done some funky stuff with mini's, but didn't realise he was the first to fit the BMW head (I was still doing bike stuff in 96 so didn't CCC then). Clever guy, and very 'hands on'.

He owns an unofficial Ferrari dealership in France now, and is getting more involved in the historic motorsport scene.

Good luck with the project  :)

Quick update on this one

I have decided to drop the turbo from the project for the time being. This is down to the time left but mainly the fact that everyone i have spoken to about getting a manifold made are running me round in circles. Another reason is that i cant afford the transmission that the turbo would need. Also i use the car for driving country roads and that much power and torque on a small, light, front wheeled car, with an open diff could be a bit of a handfull when not in a straight line on wet, constantly changing, undulating surfaces that we commonly call the British road system ::). And no, im not scared as some one put it :P

More to come on this VERY shortly ;D

Heres a it of a money shot, but im still waiting on my pistons coming back from the machine shop, for the second time >:(

Thanks bud

However, I got so far, encountered problems as well as it pissing down and illness causing depression :-[ so made the decision to put the 1400 back but with the box and bottom end off of the 16valver before there was no time to do that. ??? :o

Where i got too before i ripped it out :-[

I will be at Avon one way or the other and the 1400 is now going to the mapping session this saturday coming :)

16 valver is once again on a back burner, i spent too much money in too short a time

Hi,
So you're putting the 5 port 1400 SPi back in, or have I read that wrong?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Hi,
:( That's a bit of a bugger, but when your short on time, sacrifices have to
be made :o
Still I know where to come to for a good base setup for mine now  ;) ;D
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Nice to see you are almost there Sprocket!

If I may ask, how many cc's dish did the pistons start out with and how much are they now?

PS you have a PM:)

well, time to resurect this topic.

I have scrapped the block i originaly used on this and started again. This time there has been a whole bunch of machining done on this, line bore for the center main bearing cap, offset bore to take cyinder liners returning the engine to standard cc yet line bores up with the head chambers, all the head studs have been relocated again to line up the chambers in the head with the bores. Piston oil cooling jets are being fitted as i intend to run lean burn at part throttle to try and get the fuel economy up. Ive read that Dave Visard had done research on the A series engine with part throttle lean burn up to 25:1 AFRs  :o I WILL NOT be going that far :D so the piston oil cooling, the ally head, a full flow bypass thermostat, larger ally rad and dry deck should all help keep the engine cool. Steel rods have been purchased and I have just finnished rebuilding the VEMS with a new board, cos a buggered the last one. There is nothing that is not high specced about this engine, well, maybe the standard Rover pistons, but these have been known to be good for 8500rpm in race engines for a season, so should be well up to the job.

The dry build on the engine is nearly complete, and there is a lot of slop in the bottom end :D for good reason ;)

Im starting early this time as i intend to get this running with in the next few weeks, for a RR shoot out, but the weather is letting me down yet again, we shall see. Failing that, at least i will be ready in plenty of time for our hols and the British Mini Showdown at Avon Park Raceway in july and Mini in the Par at Santa Pod in August.

All previous plans to get this running failed ;D

Hopefully will get it fired in the next few weeks, just finishing off a few things on the engine, then I just need to put the gearbox back together and it will go straight into the car.

Its been too long, and i miss the drive :-[

Everything is coming together exactly how I had planned it so far, well it should , I didnt spend three years doing nothing :P
