Problem with AFR gauge causing noise on stereo
« on: October 19, 2007, 07:22:16 pm »
I have a Round customer who's changed his car and after fitting the Round, found that it causes some noise on the stereo.

I seem to remember this being a problem before.  Did a solution ever emerge?

Work is underway on a lower frequency heater control.

Hi Rob,

It's me that's having trouble with noise on the stereo (thanks Dave for posting about it). It's really quite loud and irritating, any news on availability of an update to the firmware?

Thanks, Steve

I've not heard anything on this yet.  I will enquire about this now.

Can you do us a quick test?  Please disconnect the sensor and see if the noise issue still occurs?
You shouldn't need to start the engine to do this.

Thanks

Rob

Sensor disconnected = no noise.

I wasn't surprised by this as the noise is linked to the heat cycle of the sensor when the ignition is first switched on. Once the heat cycle is finished, the noise just cycles up and down every few seconds. No sensor connected and the gauge just sits there with 3 dashes on the display.

I tried recording the noise but couldn't get my phone to pick it up. It's quite loud (ask Dave!) but the mic just wouldn't record it.

Cool, I've fed that information back - prepare yourself for a potential solution.

I'm guessing the wiring for the gauge is routed quite close to something stereo related - ariel, speaker cable etc?

You could try a bit of 'pikey shielding' - some aluminium foil wrapped around the cabling and connected to chassis ground to try and shield the noise. May not be pretty, but worth a try.

I used all my tin foil for my hat.

I'll see what Rob comes up with first, hopefully an electronic solution will prevail, rather than me having to disassemble my dashboard (which is what shielding would amount to).

Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll bear it in mind :)
