Having trouble connecting to VEMS
« on: March 29, 2010, 01:23:20 am »
Hey all, just so you have an idea of what the project is:

7mgte out of a '91 supra turbo, going into a '73 datsun 240z.

I fabbed a dash with an itx desktop and a 15" monitor in it so I can tune it w\out a laptop :D

I'm having a hell of a time getting VEMStune to say hello to my VEMS box.

Here's the story:

I had just finished wiring up a painless harness, and had a 2 amp battery charger clamped onto my positive and negative leads for the car's power.  A battery was not connected during this.

I turned on the computer, opened vemstune and turned on my vems box, to no avail.

I decided to double check the grounds for vems, and low and behold, my vems ground had come off the battery charger's clamp.  This freaked me out, since I had read on PhatBob's wiki that running with the grounds disconnected will damage the unit.

Now I have the motor in, the battery in, the motor grounded to chassis, and VEMS grounded to the motor, I'm getting the same problem, vemstune is just telling me it can't find the ECU on COM1.

My carputer is running win7, trying to connect to Vems using a serial port.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Alec

update - I got my laptop (which is running xp, rather than win7) to connect.  Weird.

Next up, I was playing around with the crank trigger settings, and set my number of teeth to 11, clicked send, then clicked burn, and about 5 seconds later, I tried cranking.

now my engine map is jumping from 0-6250 and every number in between.  wtf, mate?  any ideas?  thanks!

I'll stop posting on this thread, since I double posted a subquestion here.

Google chrome is screwing up vemstune for me.  weird, because IE doesn't have any effect on vemstune, but when I open up Google Chrome, vemsune goes all janky on me.
