I've got the Merc MAT sensor to install into my plenum this week.
I think its a M14 standard thread, could anyone confirm, or is it M14 fine? Or maybe its not M14 at all ???
My local tool shop only had up to M12 so I couldnt try and confirm the thread type.
Also I was thinking of mounting it just behind the throttle butterfly, there hope theres enough room (height wise) I assume there isnt a reason not to use this placement, its nice and flat you see ;) About half way between the ECCS badge and the throttle body is my plan.
I'll be taken the plenum off to drill it, so I could go in from the side if needed.

I've just measured the sensor as having an M14x1.5 thread.
Where you are suggesting putting the sensor looks fine to me. Just make sure that you have bonnet clearance.
Why not put it on the side, on the engine side Kev. Then it would blend into the other things that are already mounted there and not stick out like a sore thumb!. Temp sensors don't care about their orientation like other sensors do.
You have a good point there, it will keep the wiring tucked out the way.
OK, I'll stick it on the side, so it will be hidden with the injector wires ect.

As per other conversation, send it up to DCMS and I'll get it into the manifold.
Any particular runner better?
Is the car actually going to be running?
If not they can chuck a 1/8bsp threaded hole in.
For placement I was always impressed with James@Driftworks method of tapping the inlet of the turbine housing, lots of meat there and you're not making a hole in the stressed material of the manifold...

That job is now done and sorted :D

We decided not to fit the turbo today, and will sort a tap ands weld a point in on the manifold, if a job is worth doing its worth doing right ;)
Just remember the EGT probe needs to see all the cylinders. Thats why Rob likes the turbine housing, but I've not seen any problems with putting it in the collector, close to the flange.
how much of the sensor needs to be in the gas flow to work
thats a good question never throught about that lol i think if you get the tip into the centre you will be fine.

Looking at the pic, I'd argue you've got it near to where the 4 pipes come together, which could leave it in a stagnant area. It'll still see a high temp, but maybe not as high as the true temp. Hard to say. However, maybe the boss is angled so that the tip ends up nearer the flange that it looks like?
Also to pick up on Robs comment - in the centre is best, as long as you have durable thermocouples (the special 6mm/3mm ones). Otherwise be careful as 3mm ones extended that far long term have a nasty tendency of breaking off and disappearing through your turbo.......
Damo is sending back his old style 3mm one and getting it replaced with the turbo friendly type.

You seemed to think this was reasonable from your comments on SXOC.
The sender there is a (broken) GReddy sender, just for fitment check. It will have a 5mm "turbo friendly" EGT Thermocouple when Bob gets his hands on it.
