Hi
my ignition is locked to 10 degrees, from what I read it is a kind of copy protection.
how do I remove this problem?
I have a very old 3.1 VEMS board No 57
Running firmware 1.2.11
bought by 'used' by this man :-)

My vems wiki http://www.vems.hu/wiki/index.php?page=MembersPage%2FMadsB (not quite up to date)
Regards Mads
You need to upgrade a firmware(bootloader).
Where are you from?
HI
im from Denmark
Can i downgrade to, i think it was 1.1.96_bootloader..... it is on my wiki but vems wiki is down at the moment
According to this page, it is not possible to use higher firmware than 1.1.94 on a VEMS 3.1, unless you upgrade the bootloader to the new type
is this the cause of my problem ??
http://vems.hu/vt/help/v3/general/bootloader_upgrade.html
You can send the ECU to me and I'll fix the bootloader for you. Should not take long to ship to/from Denmark to north of Sweden.
Send me a message on the forum for details.
Is it possible to fix this without having to send the ecu ? Postage is around 270 dkr X 2 :-(
Not unless you get yourself an ISP interface cable and install the proper drivers and software (avrdude).
Here is a wiki page I made about it : http://www.vems.hu/wiki/index.php?page=MembersPage%2FMattiasSandgren%2FNickesBMW%2FAvrBootCode
I have made a ISP cable, the "bsd" type using your instructions :-)
Is it correct that i only need to use this command and after that i can use vemstune?
avrdude -c bsd -p m128 -U lfuse:w:0x2f:m -U hfuse:w:0xc4:m -U efuse:w:0xff:m -U lock:w:0x3c:m
Thanks Mads
Little more info.... vemstune names my box "unknown"
Hello Mads_B (dk),
If VemsTune reports the ecu as unknown, there must be problems with the serial number in the ecu. This will also force locked ignition timing to 10 degrees like you experienced.
Could you check what serial number is detected by VemsTune and report back ? Its available on "File -> Firmware info".
Best regards, Dave
maybe because I have done something wrong at first powerup?.....look at wiki -> 27/06/2013

from email communication I know that the original owner's name is Ryan McMakin, if this helps to solve this problem
Hello Mads,
Thanks for your swift reply, i can confirm the missing serial number as being the cause of the locked timing.
1) First step in order to resolve this would be to request an nhex bootloader from Hungary with valid serial number by sending an email through: http://shop.vems.hu/catalog/contact_us.php
2) If you have access to an ISP cable (or are willing to buy or make one using the guide on: http://www.vems.hu/wiki/index.php?page=MembersPage/MattiasSandgren/NickesBMW/AvrBootCode for reference) you can than flash your board with this file.
3) After the proper serial numbered bootloader has been uploaded you can upload any firmware of your choosing (upto 1.2.11), for newer firmwares, bootloader upgrade to uhex would be required. See: http://vems.hu/vt/help/v3/general/bootloader_upgrade.html for the required steps.
Best regards, Dave
I have made a ISP cable :-) now i "just" need the nHex bootloader with a seriel number that matches board number 57.
Could not I just get the uhex bootloader.... with the right seriel number that matches my board ??
There are required steps outlined above, follow them.
So far so good
I have used this command with success :-)
avrdude -c bsd -p m128 -U lfuse:w:0x2f:m -U hfuse:w:0xc4:m -U efuse:w:0xff:m -U lock:w:0x3c:m
still waiting for vems.hu to report back regarding nHex bootloader
Yesterday I received the correct bootloader from VEMS and Today I programmed VEMS with the "new" bootloader incl. the correct serial number.
Now it works as it should :-) I have further updatet the bootloader through vemstune to uHex :-)
