Title: Not starting with wasted spark?!
Post by: gox on January 04, 2014, 03:51:50 PM
Hi all!

BMW M20 Turbo with standard 60-2 setup...actually everything worked fine until i swapped engine to another car...Car doesnt start with msd coils.I tested the outputs from the Ignition Outputs Visual dialog and i get spark on all 3 coils, but engine doesnt start...I switched back to single coil and rotor and it fires right up...tried several times,i dont have any more ideas where could be the problem...
Here is the wiring:

Cyl 1&6 - EC36 Pin10
Cyl 2&5 - EC36 Pin11
Cyl 3&4 - EC36 Pin12

Single coil works when selected any of the three pins that are using the msd coils...it doesnt look hardware related.I didnt changed the Reference Tooth table its 40-20-0-40-20-0 from top to bottom...Am i missing something here?

Here are the config files and trigger log on cranking:

Hello Gox,

With problems like this i suspect the problem lies in the configured firing order, e.g. the order of ignition outputs in "base setup -> ignition outputs visual".
I suggest starting diagnosys by checking the timing on each cylinder pair with timing light to see if it matches actual TDC mark (make one if not present) for that cylinder pair (of course with injectors disconnected).

Best regards, Dave

I made  TDC mark long time ago when i was installing VEMS and checking the trigger settings with ignition locked to 0...
The odd thing is that everything worked fine for few years and then just boom...without anything changed in the config...
Firing order from top to bottom was configured simply 10-11-12-10-11-12...

your trigger log doesn't shows any ignition event. are you getting rpm when cranking or you are only getting running on indicator?
