Title: rs232 to bluetooth
Post by: Seight-v8 on November 13, 2013, 07:55:38 PM
Hello all,

For a winter upgrade I want to be able to use vems display for android with my new android phone, i'm looking at RS232-bluetooth adapters and found this

http://btlink.co.uk/ds/BTLink_Bluetooth_RS-232_Adapter_User_Manual_V2.7.pdf (http://btlink.co.uk/ds/BTLink_Bluetooth_RS-232_Adapter_User_Manual_V2.7.pdf)

I still want to be able to use the serial port with my laptop in the garage, but while out & about be able to see info on my phone.

Anyone tried this type of adapter, and if I wire in a 5v supply to pin 9 on the dsub......will this be any problem if I connect my laptop back up.

cheers

scott

It's not a problem for the laptop connection. The recent Plug and Play ECUs, since they have a separate serial connector, not going through the ec18, have 5V wired to pin9. The rs232 specification dictates any line may be shorted to +/-25V or something crazy like that and not damage anything. So we just reused the RI signal on pin9 to power the device, as many other companies have done.

Just in case you didn't know, we have our own adapters available here in Europe: https://shop.vems.hu/catalog/bluetooth-rs232-adapter-p-179.html
Also available in the US from http://www.vems.us

I've been running the VEMS rs232=>BT adapter and I like it.  I've used it with the Android app and also with a BT transceiver in my laptop.  Why not just get a BT transceiver (USB) for you machine in your garage?  It's nice being wireless!
