The Inside:
Standard Capri except for rear seats removed a Saftey Devices 6 point roll cage fitted,
Battery moved to the boot,
Recaro half leather front seats,
ripspeed steering wheel,
Autometer 5" Sport Comp rev counter/shift light and line loc for front brakes,
Hah, badass. Very clean and tidy install too. Makes my VEMS feel a little under-used (mine is coming in a few mins)..
Good work :)
Cheers Paz,
have a few other bits to do yet,
Have the EGT gauge to fit (when i workout how to remove the terminals from the plug)
and then run the car on wasted spark
Yep I'm with Paz on theis - thats a very neat engine bay. Looks really good. 8)
Mid 13's aren't exectly slow either. Good work. ;D
very nice mate
thanks for the kind words,
once the egt is wired up and running the next step is to up the nitrous to 150bhp,
hoping for a possible 12 this year ::)
like i said then we are going to play with the ignition system using the vems :o
Ignition and VEMS is a good combination :D
be prepared for an ear bending via e-amil dave when i start :D
Cool V8 :) Red is growing on me real like it alot.
Mint! I love capri's and this is a very clean example 8)
cheers guys,
i will get some other pics up asap
A pic of us playing :o

just a quick update:
now have a pair stg3 heads, along with a crower race cam and a set of hi rev anti pump lifters,
i will get this Capri to fly ;D

Lifters
(http://www.v-8.org.uk/images/forumimages/lifters.jpg)
Nice heads :) I have a set like that somewhere ;)
it's taken me a while to get them mate :'(
just now need to get a cutting tool made to cutthe valve reliefs in the pistons as the new cam's lift is a bit high ::) :o
im hoping to have her all together the week leading up to easter
will wire up the egt while the car is in bits, and get the old plug sent back to rob (i have not forgotten mate)
TVR did most of the work on the heads for me when the car was first built. I just had to tidy them up & fix the bits they didn't do right...
What lift are you running with that cam? I've just got a H404 from V8D for mine & I'm a little concerned for my pistons now!
inlet is 480
exhaust is 501
thats hot with rocker ratio 1.6
Doesn't sound too different to mine.
I wish I could find some cheaper roller rockers than Yella Terras to go with the cam...
have you tried summit or jegs?
can always ask on my v8 forum if you want to mate.
i made up a patch lead for the a/f-egt gauge today so it can go through the bulkhead with the other cables, i hope by making this extention cable it don't effect its workings,
also made the cable outlet hole on my gauge pod bigger to allow all the cables from the gauge to go through,
i made a sleeve sheath up to keep cables tidy from pod to behind the dash.
will put pictures up before the weekend,
the egt gauge, modified pod and new loom extention,

just an update:
ran the car at santa pod last weekend (classic ford day)
ran a pb of 13.314 @ 104.39 mph
and a quick vid :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bM-jTHl8IQ
Nice ;D
Cheers Rob,
yeah have a few tweeks to do aiming for a 12's pass in july, but otherwise the car ran faultless.
would i benefit from the 16x16 table? to get an even wider range of fine tuning mate?
I wouldnt have thought that 16x14 would give you any advantages unless there are some parts of the table that you find you just cant get a clean transistion on. One of the blokes on the mainland reported that he only needed to use an 8x8 table when running AlphaN on his BMW!
Rob
just an update,
car is running nice,
then dnb took a look and got her running even better (and he is still working on the settings for me to get her better still, top man) this where we have now found the poor factory injectors are not coping, eh Dave ;D
bigger injectors now needed, 8)
not sure if dnb mines me posting this,
but he has noticed that my EGO settings are all on but it aint working,
I've already put a post in the config forum to make sure I've thought of everything.
ah nice one cheers mate.
just getting ready to upgrade the injectors to bosch greens, (440cc's)
they arrived from fiveomotorsport in the states yesterday (monday)
dnb told me to use a transient suppression diode, has my ecu already got this fitted Rob when you built it?
If not what do i need to get, as i got an account at maplins and rs components,
ta mate,
It certainly wouldnt have come with one as the transient diode wasnt an option back when yours was supplied. I'm not sure what happened with it when it came back to me, as I've slept since then.
This is the diode you need:
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=1.5KE30A&x=24&y=8
Cheers
Rob
Cheers rob,
i'll order them at work in the morning,
planning on getting the injectors fitted this weekend, and if the diodes arrive fit that too.
if not that can be done one evening.
well diodes arrived,
(not fitted yet)
but this weekend we got on with removing the injection system, and fitting the new injectors etc,
Trial fit, to check fittment.

she lives,
http://www.v-8.org.uk/video/440ccfireup.MP4
just a bit of tweaking now then sort the ego fault out and i can go racing again :D
Lets get things logged and we'll get the log and msq up on the wiki and prod the boys for suggestions.
Rob
i'll do a datalog this weekend coming mate,
as David (DNB) wants a a datalog to check over to see how the new settings are behaving.
out of curiosity, you recon if i can get a log done this weekend we may have news before next weekend? (8/9 march) i just had a look at my downloaded config we did the weekend from the ecu and it meant nowt to me ??? :o
I should think so... Not quite so busy this week!
Cheers Dave,
will get on it ASAP friday afternoon/saturday morning and upload the file(s) to my server and post the links here.
will you be able to work from the present config and datalog?
Rob:
David has a couple of datalogs taken this month along with my present .msq and i have the current config from last weekend from the ecu? will these do to get the ball rolling?
if so i can add links here for you to download for the wiki to try and sort this fuel correction fault out,,
Lets kick off with the ones that you do today.
here you go mate, (Rob and David and any one else)
latest msq file,
todays datalog,
and config present on ecu.
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/feb_29_02_08.zip (http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/feb_29_02_08.zip)
the car is well wet now as its pissing down ere, and she dont get wet that often, once or twice a year maybe :'(
is every thing you need in that zip file?
Seems to be everything...
The summary is that ego correction still isn't working, and the car is running rich. Approximately lambda 0.9 when it should be lambda 1.
i diod notice today when i drove it it was a bit stuttery, but think thats where we need to set the injector times now aint it David for the bigger injectors
Yes - the differences that are left will be taken out with the VE table
so we dont need to adjust it then mate?
had to reconfig the tps today as where had the plenum off was only getting 94 throttle in MT thats back to 100% but had to change closed and open values, that wont upset enrichments or anything will it?
had chance to give her a proper run today,
there are two logs in this file, a driving one and a standing start accel one,
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/march_02_03_08.zip
she is defo bogging out at full throttle it dies then picks up and goes like fook,
think you mayneed to do a bit of tweeking David,
Also i noticed no spikes in the log, only thing different was a fully charged laptop battery and not running of the car battery.
Rob, have you had time to pass this on to the guys on the wiki?
if so any news or ideas?
sorry to ask, just so i know what im at this weekend regarding the first race meeting of the year :D

Sorry mate, I've been up to my neck in work these past couple of weeks.
You'd not be using EGO at WOT so theres no reason not to go racing...
i agree,
but its the worrying thought of the drive up there from here to the Pod, :D
I thought if anything you were a little on the richer AFR side.
Davids done a ve table refig mate,
once i have loaded the new .msq i need to do him another datalog,
he is a good man,
here you go David,
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/latestlog08.zip
OK. I'll run that one through the analyser and see where we get.
How was the car tonight?
ran a 1000 times better mate, compared to the other .msq we tried,
pulls good, maybe you will look at the log and say, we can get her better, :D
i have noticed though this time round theres more spikes on this log, and it was running on the laptop battery again not car power,
once this is sorted just this fuel correction to get working and i will be a happy person again....
cheers for all your help so far David,
racing is looking even more certain now every time we do a new upload and road test for you.
we had a a problem when we first installed the vems where the pump channel (pin 15) shut down and we lost output from that pin,
after a call to rob he advised us to move it to pin 34 or something like that which worked and has been since,
where the pump is now could this be causing the spikes we are getting?
and the pin 15 not working could that be affecting the fuel correction or also causing the spikes?
Pin 34 is a high power transistor thats very well insulated (they handle driving coils directly) so a spike from that is unlikely to say the least.
Where are you getting the spikes? (Which reading?)
i will let David answer this one as he is familiar with my settings and datalogs now better than me :D
but the latest log is here:
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/latestlog08.zip
I've had an idea about the EGO correction.
In Megatune, in settings->VE learning (auto tune) there may be an error.
VE learning is currently disabled, so enable it.
This will allow you to edit Simulation. This is currently enabled and should be disabled.
Now disable VE learning again, and burn these settings to the ECU.
This *should* make EGO correction work. I've not been able to test this, so it could of course be another red herring...
i'll have a look after i grab the kids from school mate,
ta very much,
nope still didnt work,
but while i was out i have done another datalog mate, along with one on nitrous,
she looks mighty rich on gas, so i may be able to run a slightly smaller fuel jet to lean her up a bit,
see what you think the datalog as normal first, then see what you recon to the nitrous one,
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/log07_03_08.zip
You want about 0.7 to 0.71 on gas, more power is possible at 0.75 but you'd really want to watch the EGTs and accept that you could grenade the engine if you run that lean.
Cheers Rob,
I doubt i would of got this far this quick without Davids help.
Quite looking forward to Sunday now at the Fast show weather permitting,
So if you need any more data done after any tweaking you have in mind David tomorrow is our last run before the car is to the track mate.
right went and fired the car up, not touched any settings from yesterdays log i posted,
changed the nitrous to 150bhp shot,
took car for a run on gas, turned gas off, and now ecu is running lean, any ideas.?????
log here, (this is without gas) today.
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/log08_03_08.zip
and yesterdays,
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/log07_03_08.zip
I'd be more worried about finding what's causing those spikes to be honest, the lambda at low loads looks fine, 1.040 to 0.990, can you give me a time point that you're concerned about?
we have tried all sorts trying to find the spikes mate,
we dont know if its alternator or the ignition cdi unit,
after the weekend we are going to start removing bits, like alternator, stereo amps etc etc, to see if that stops it.
any pointers where to look?
you sorted the earths out on the wiring and the spikes are still there :(
spark plugs?
If any one is interested these are the spikes we are on about,
(http://www.v-8.org.uk/images/forumimages/spike.jpg)
Rob,David, do you think where we have pin27 going to may cause this?
we have it going to the tach output on the cdi box, should i run pin 27 to the negative coil post instead???
your views?
Wasnt this running with a hall output from the distributor originally?
if i remember correctly yes Rob.
Can we not do that anymore then?
I believe Tony is still doing this.
yes i am.
the car ran faultless today in the higher rev range, once in traffic it kangarroed every where and had trans shunt real bad,
not sure what we did this time Dave, but the last update you sent me it never did this, has it been leaned off to much now?
roll on this fuel correction working,
right the racing,
fekin disaster, the track was so green due to over night rain i was getting wheel spin up the track even on gear changing into 3rd and 4th,
If you're on hall then I don't think that the noise will be coming from the trigger.
This electrical noise is a pain in the arse...
Shame about the track being wet.
Rob
it was a disaster mate, every time the controller went to 100% and gave 150 bhp nitrous a sliding the rear end went,
Jago is coming over next weekend to try and help find this noise, he recons he can find it so i will let him have ago,
Had any feed back on the fuel correction prob yet Rob?
as i would like to get this sorted sooner or later as the race and show season is about to kick off for 2008.
Sounds like I did lean the cruise area off a bit too much. It would be really nice to have correction...
I think the next step would be to use my spare Hall VEMS in your car woth your config.
that would eliminate or point to the ecu then,
a couple of vids taken from today,
which was posted over on my v8 forum,
In car view of Tonys Capri
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARPoGxaKIys
Tony vs Perry )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEKgN4EyFJg
listen for the wheels spinning on gear changes on the in car vid :o
I wonder if there could be a setting thats crept in when the Firmware upgrade was done last year. I doubt that its hardware because the changes would be calculations to adjust the injector PW and thats all handled by the software. If you could download your config files then it will be possible to use a diff tool against a known good config to see where the odd differences are.
latest config is this one Rob,
http://www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/config.txt
Maybe the easiest solution would be to put my TVR config on there and alter the trigger and outputs back to what they should be for the Capri.
im ready to try anything David mate,
i just want her running right so i can rest from going out and doing config dloads and datalogs every time i go out :D
That makes sense, we know that your one works. Bugs are funny things as they dont behave in a way that makes them easy to catch.
for anyone following this post,
the ecu now has the ego working ;-)
Dnb kindly reworked my VE table,
and i have had to change it a bit more to cure trans shut in the lower rpm range,
but think im getting good now, the ego seems pretty good to the target lambda,
what you recon Rob?.
www.v-8.org.uk/zipfiles/log15_04_08.zip
also got sent this pic from the track where we were testing with the vems and the new squirt of 150bhp nitrous in march, not bad considering she is on stock leaf springs and we have nearly got the front wheels off the ground at launch :o ;)

right hi and merry crimbo to every one,
sorry not been about, due to the car off the road had nothing really to report back on,
BUT thats all going to change (Oh f**k i hear Rob cry ),
just getting ready to order the trigger wheel etc so i can go over to wasted spark,
im still a bit consirned regarding the retard when on gas,
we have covered this in the past, but never with a 100% outcome, so im bringing it up again as now it needs doing,
my present set up is a mallory coil and dizzy with a mallory CDI unit, (has built in retard feature )
when on gas the nitrous controller sends a neg trigger to the cdi unti at a set point which the unit then retards the ignition,
is there any way vems can be controlled the same way?
e.g if it gets a neg signal from the controller it can retard the ignitition?
i dont really want to do away with my n20 controller as it is a race version one.
rod if this is in wrong section feel free to move please,
Tony, the newer versions of the firmware have some nice N20 controller features.
Take a look at: http://195.159.109.134/vemsuk/forum/index.php/topic,618.0.html
For a brief description of what's available.
i have just posted regarding the solenoid firing,
the only concern i have is, if the pulsoids are triggered by something else other than there controller i have no warranty against wear or engine failure due to a malfunction mate,
this the faetures of this controller: http://www.noswizard.com/product_desc.php?id=101
http://www.noswizard.com/OLD/images/pdf/max_extreme_text.html
if there is anyway the vems can accept some sort of input to retard the igntion at a set position that would be well cool, as i keep my warranty on the Nos parts then,
http://www.noswizard.com/product_list.php?id=2
sorry this is the correct link to my nitrous controller,
http://www.noswizard.com/admin1/pdf/Maximiser_Manual.pdf
Stick to using the NOS controller that you have, if its got a warranty then you'd be mad to start dabbling elsewhere.
The Swedish guys have stopped using coil-packs on the big power engines and use distributors and external ignition packs because they need the high ignition output and coil-packs don't provide it
If I could suggest a plan of action it would be:
1. Investigate the triggering of your CDI unit - if it can be triggered by the VEMS then:
2. Mount the 36-1 trigger wheel from Triggerwheels.co.uk - I think he does a Rover V8 mounting kit.
3. Get the fuel injection working on the 36-1 setup.
4. Get a solid mounted distributor for the rover (no mechanical or vacuum advance/retard)
5. Trigger the CDI unit from the VEMS
doh wish i posted this months ago,
as just sold my dizzy etc,
and bought coil packs :-(
also any reason why im not getting any reply notifications on the new forum setup mate?
this is my cdi unit mate:
http://www.malloryperformance.com/ProductDetails.aspx?modelNumber=685&productID=2562&majID=534&minID=5342&selection=3&minselection=1
and install manual, does this help regarding triggering?
http://www.malloryperformance.com/pdf/685_6851.pdf
You'd want to lock a standard dizzy, you've still got the CDI haven't you?
I can't read the pdf because I'm on a mobile phone connection.
well i had to sell it all as such to pay for the coil packs and bits etc,
the cdi unit has been asked to go back to my sponsor as they want it back,
im not sure what to do now, had evry thing set to go wasted spark this time as had the ecu changed to suit now also :-(
i think for now im going to have to go coil packs as i have every thing here now,
plus if there is a fault with current setup (miss fire) This will eliminate it.
the only downside until i can sort out how to retard the ignition via an output from the n20 controller i can't use it
Going coil-packs is one of the best ways to eliminate present and potential problems regarding misfires. Getting rid of the stok dizzy is a good decision :)
i agree, the nitrous problem is the next thing to sort out though.
All the CDI was built in to the Mallory unit Tony sold IIRC. Don't worry about running out of ignition energy - there's plenty available from the coils to get over 400bhp from a 5 litre RV8. You can't tune a Rover v8 like the Swedish guys are doing without spending more than both of Tony's and my budget put together... ;)
cheers Dave ;)
I was missing the point about the ignition retard - thought you still had the box.
Wasted spark it is then, I'm not sure about the N2O retard as I've never looked at it.
http://195.159.109.134/vemsuk/forum/index.php/topic,618.msg7351.html#new
not sure if this will work,
So you'd be using Input ch5 to let VEMS know that the N2O is active? That might be the trick - hopefully someone will be along who knows - its certainly worth you setting up some experiments to see what its function is.
Rob
i'll try a few when i get the engine back in the car mate,
if that works then we are laughing, plus it is handy for the other nitrous users that have a progressive controller with an ignition retard output.
Sambas reckons that the functionality you want is in the newest version 1.1.47 (he posted a link to it recently).
where abouts is that mate?
found it and dloaded
hi all sorry been away,
been busy trying to keep my job (recession) and rebuild the car after the miss fire on the rolling road last August,
well we now have a brand new engine to go in, (its bigger than the 3.9 that came out)
its around 11:1 comp ratio, stage 3 heads, wasted spark ignition,
heres a few pics of the build,
setting tdc.

as you can see have been a bit busy :D
after many weeks dicking about trying to get a stat housing,
we decided to say F@@K IT,
and made our own , this way we have it the way we need it,
And the new ecu fixing is nearly finished,
First take a sheet of Ally, and workout what you want to fix onto it,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/ecumount.jpg)
Then after a bit of cutting drilling and fettling, work out where you are going to mount it all,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/ecumount2.jpg)
after a while:
with Caprisports help,
things are going together fast,
ecu bracket spacers bolted through the floor and carpet trimmed to go over the spacers.
Starting of the rewire of the ecu relays and fusebox,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/16-08ecumount3.jpg)
Finished, now comes the wiring job from the fusebox and relays back to the ecu,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/16-08ecumount4.jpg)
Also Caprisport made a start on the suspension upgrade:
Front end:
Old strut removed, and new coil over inserted, with 300lb springs,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/16-08strut.jpg)
The HUGE 315mm Caprisport front discs refitted.
Now the Brembo calipers are refitted,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/16-08strut3.jpg)
Alloy spherical adjustable top mounts are also fitted,
(http://www.v8forum.co.uk/images/forumimages/16-08strut4.jpg)
