Audi 200 20vt on VEMS

Hey guys, thought it would be a good idea to document a little about this car in hopes of quick help, and some learning opportunities.

in short, firmware is 1.1.27

Ok, so the car is a 1991 Audi 200 20vt on stock turbo for now. The idea was to get the car running flawlessly on VEMS before going for a bigger Holset (H1C) and then something even bigger later

The basic setup is 5 individual high output coils from 034 Motorsport, VEMS v3.3, blah, blah...the car is very solid in almost every way...but this ECU has given me a bit of a headache so far.

A lot of the problems are outlined in that wiki page, but the most recent one involves "the AFR table values in Megatune changing to 15+ AFR by itself" and some backfiring issues upon onset of boost.

It seems that these motors are very picky with what plugs are used in them, so I switched them out today for a nice set, and it backfired once on the initial drive...then after that it made about 6 or 7 really strong and clean pulls.

I can post logs of that if needed, and can take more logs tomorrow.

The issue with the megatune is the most annoying though. I have tried using two different laptops, one with xp and one with vista. Sometimes when I try to mess with the tables when its not hooked up to the car, lambda values get randomly changed.

Then when I tried it with the ECU connected today, it turned the kPa and RPM values at the bottom and side of the table all go to zero...obviously when I burned this to ecu and tried to start the car, it had trouble running as it defaulted to the top right corner which had a value of about 11.5:1 AFR. It idled, but not correctly. I tried this multiple times with the same problem, and had to switch to my vista computer to put the right tune back in the car. Its the same exact file sent through e-mail.

Both computers occasionally pull up messed up tables though. I'd just like to get to the bottom of this issue.

Sounds like not computer or XP problem, but mismatch between vems ECU firmware and Megatune package. Every firmware version needs different files in tuning program too.
Safer way is download full package with Megatune and firmware from here:

Had another batch of issues tonight.

It did rain really hard, so I'm not sure whether it should be attributed to rain or more ECU problems.

The car was doing this back when it somehow got the wrong setting in the ecu for the H2 stuff. The top one was listed as stepper instead of ign. I haven't touched the ECU today and it just randomly started doing this.

First of all, it would lose RPM signal completely then just run like crap because its defaulting to a low afr value I assume. As soon as I cycle ignition power, its fine and runs perfectly again.

Also sometimes when cranking, RPM's will jump up and it will simultaneously sound like its out of time or something...just for a split second...then it will continue cranking and fire up.

I'll hook the ECU up in the morning and see if that H2 value got changed again somehow.

I did notice that all the Y's at the bottom are "0" instead of "FF"
