vems install on audi coupe 20v turbo (based on 7a)
« on: June 25, 2009, 04:21:47 am »
hello all :) so I decided to turbocharge my audi coupe with 7a engine :) vems installed (not fully) ignition is working, fuel injection works too. When I'm cranking the engine without spark plugs I can see engine rpm trought megatune, it reaches about 170rpm, and megatune doesn't shows any error. so I tried to start my engine, got some problems with ignition outputs, because they are connected first cylinder =a second=b and so on. I swaped spark plug wires to get correct firing order. tried to start it, but sound was like ignition was too late, so I changed tdc after the trigger  from 58 to 0, and got engine started I know It's incorrect, engine starts well, but it doesnt responds to throtle, and is running  pulsing. one more problem is that when engine is running on pulsing idle, no more like 700 rpm, I see on megatune that rpm raises up to 3000 rpm, while in reality engine runs same like on pulsing idle. I'm getting trigger error on megatune too :) now I'm using official default audi trigger configuration, only tdc after the trigger  from 58 to 0 are changed, maybe someone have correct configuration for an engine with audi 7a flywheel?

maybe problem is in that because alternator is not connected for now? now engine are just on testing stage.
when I'll get free time I'll make schematics how everything is connected, and paste my config.
sorry for my bad english.

Have you hall inverter?
What trigger tooth is configured? Dizzy or COP?

One thing to check or try is TDC sensor polarity.

how can I check is inverter on on my board, something aditional soldered, or what? I'll try to check this by http://www.vems.hu/wiki/index.php?page=AudiTrigger%2FCamHALLInverter  hope it is my problem :)  I purchased vems board and soldered it by my self, when was purchasing it said it will be used for an audi, it was purchased about 2 months ago, i'm using 5 coils ( non logic level) something like this http://www.brewspeed.com/index_files/i5coilpackbracket.gif  "TDC sensor" you are talking about hall sensor in distributor, or vr crank home? my flywheel http://www.theswansonfamily.us/modules/gallery2/v/marc/work_0/efiexpress/vems/crank_triggers/5cyl_flywheels/IMG_1167.JPG.html

yes you were right, my vems was without inverter :) so made it, used old configuration, set trigger tooth 0, car started as it should, but megatune still shows trigger error and misfire :)

here is my configuration http://pastebin.com/m5ac4418a what's wrong with it?

You should install Hall inverter if your flywheel has four notches. Designed for easy oil pan removing.

Or as alternative: cut off these notches on lathe.

hello one more time :) so cam hall inverter installed, using 1.1.27 firmware engine starts ok, when engine is on idle everyhing looks ok, no trigger errors, no misfire, but when I raise rpm up to the 1500 megatune shows trigger error and misfire, maybe someone knows where can be a problem? tried to swap vr sensor wires, then it gets worse. I made small log, there you can see rmp reaches unreal values and then I get spark cut http://www.sendspace.com/file/08j63s maybe need to change tdc after the trigger  from 58 to 62?

You should verify that Hall sensor is timed correctly regarding crank home pin. It can still be off a bit.

Two channel o-scope is best way to check this.
But usually adjust distributor on mark is enough. Window is wide enough.
