Clarification on EGT tap size
« on: August 14, 2008, 10:29:33 pm »
Hey guys, I didnt want to bump an old thread I found in here (it actually warned me!).

Just trying to work out if i need a bsp or bspt tap for the EGT sensor.  I'm planning on mounting it in the exhaust housing on the turbo and am happy i can get it manifold side far enough from harm but cant make out what to tap it with.

I found this with searching

The EGT bung is 1/8bsp-t (tapered) so that the thread seals against a standard 1/8bsp hole.  I think there was someone selling a tap set for one of those on here a while back.

Cheers

Rob

Is that right? you can tap a bsp-t hole so i'm confused!

I didnt know the forum puts out warnings, I really have very little control over it you know.  I might bump an old thread just to annoy it. ;D

This place sells 1/8BSP taps: http://www.tapdie.com/html/bspt__taps.html

Most just use non-tapered taps as you'll find that the bung will screw in and jam, sealing things well enough for our purposes.  If you were thinking of piping boiling oil at high pressure then a proper tapered fitting would be essential.

I've got some 1/8BSP (not T) taps here and 8.8mm drill bits too from something else (think it was a water temp sender).  I just wanted to be sure that it was going to be ok to do it with that.  I take your point about boiling oil etc tho lol :D

If you want to test the theory on a bit of scrap then that wouldnt be a bad idea.
