IGBT with BMW coils Bremi 11860 ++ Dwell time ++
« on: August 25, 2016, 08:54:41 am »
Hi,

I would like to ask you about suggested dwell time based on your experience as my own are low.

I was running engine with stock coils BMW 12 13 1 703 359 used in M60 (dwell set to 2.5ms with scale 1)

However these coils didn't stay it long actually two burned already. One blow out path from board other brake down IGBT driver.
So now I have replaced all with  Stock M62/S62   BMW 12 13 1 748 017 which is Bremi.

I found out dwell 3.3ms suggested by MOTEC. I know that this settings are related to coil based on design but I have concerns based on my experience so better to have cross reference. Mainly because I don't have equipment to measure it by scope etc.

Can somebody who is using the same coils .. share tested dwell please ?

IGBT drivers installed to my board are ISL9V3040P3

Hello Matus,

For any coil on plug i would suggest 1.5-1.8msec as a starting value. 2.5 or 3.3msec for that matter sounds much too high.

Best regards, Dave

Hi,

dwell for BMW 12131748017 COPs are:

V      8     10    12   13.2  14   16
--------------------------------------
ms    7.4  4.8   3.4  3.0   2.7  2.3

they are "first generation" COPs with external IGBTs
similar design to the VAG version #058905101

3.0ms@13.2V with MAP scale = 1 is a good value,
even 3.3ms shouldn't bother them.

Check for proper wiring and tight connectors (terminal sockets),
they tend to get loose, causing early failure.
If you take used ones, check for cracks, to much heat left these marks
and better sort them out.

regards

Yea, so I replaced two IGBT drivers yesterday and one new coil was burned again.
However I found out that problem was in my ECU assembly as one bolt that fit ray of drivers to the case was touching the board.

Now fixed so I will try suggested settings, thanks.

Now that you were talking about it, anyone know the dwell time for Bosch 2x2 double fire coil (0 221 503 407) Mine is set at 3.01 ms, but never actually got to know if that is right.
