Primary trigger hall setup for v3.8
« on: May 25, 2016, 11:17:05 pm »
Hi!

I am struggling to get the crank signal on a BMW M52 engine which has a hall crank sensor with +5V power supply. The board is an unassembled v3.8. I believe I have the sensor connected to the right pins.

Inside the case I have only soldered sj2 for the hall. Do i need to change something else? The R30 is currently 27k and R37 is not installed at all.

From many places I have read the following information, but it is hard for me to fully understand what it is saying. Do I need to install a 4k7 in R30?

Quote
R30 pullup
For primary trigger HALL: 4k7 parallel with (soldered piggyback on top) factory 18k (or factory 27k on v3.7 devices since 2013-11 ... doesn't matter in this case; don't be surprised if R30 resistor marking is 2702 or 273 instead of 1802 or 183)

Thanks for any hints!

P.S: This is my first VEMS install, I feel a little lost right now. So far I have assembled Megasquirt's, and only tuned a few VEMS'es.

Are you sure it's a hall sensor? I have a M52 and it's VR crank. I'm in the US though, and I know our engines are a little different sometimes. But for the most part 1990's BMW is typically VR crank and sometimes VR cam, sometimes Hall cam.

Well I have found different information about the sensors of M52 (there are many possibilities), but I checked that stock ECU feeds it a +5V, so I believe it is a hall sensor (which is one of the possiblities).

Thank you! Just needed to change the resistor, got the RPM now.

Also changed the wiki about primary trigger to be clearer (at least for me it looks better now), someone might want to verify that all information there about "v3.6 or newer" is correct.

Thanks once more!
