ECU enters bootloader

I was working on a setup today where I supplied a new ECU. The car already had a universal harness since a couple of years.  The old ECU had no issues, but was retired for other duty and was from 2005 or something (serialnr 1xx).

With nothing connected to the serialport the new ECU goes into bootloader mode when it is powered up.

I tried connecting 10kOhm between ground (pin 5) and either of RX/TX (pin 2/3) with no resolve.

Anyone else have solved this issue in some way?

It seems that there are some og the newer boards that dosent work when they are powered up the first time

I have had one and Can see others have also had problems lately ,

I forgot to add, the board works without a hitch when you connect it to a laptop. But then a USB adapter without power or nothing connected at all = bootloader.

Update:  As Skassa said, when you power the main relay the first time you get bootloader. Then only if you quickly turn it off, then on again, will the ECU boot up normally.  Odds were simply electrically better with a powered USB adapter connected.

All electronics are powered through a B+ post on the firewall. We tried removing the MSD CDI ignition box (MSD 6A) from this post, no difference.
I've never seen it before like this. It was never an issue with the old ECU with everything else exactly the same (harness, and all).

Any clues on how to solve this issue?

Is it factory assembled v3 or self-assembled? Some boards came without the needed cap and resistor near Atmega, there was an email from headquarters how to resolve this. It affected baords with serial numbers of 9900-10500. The added components would prevent the board not to start.

Could this be related to your problem?

Yes, this is very likely. Board is factory assembled, s/n 10xxx.  Could you forward the e-mail to me, or point to a link in Wiki about this issue?

When the board does not startup you cannot connect to it from VemsTune, yes correct. Follow the steps linked in the document.
