I asked about this on Mypage on VEMS Wiki and would like clarification again.

Reading the above it is now clear that my understanding of a diode is vague. I thought that a diode allowed current to pass in one direction only with the exception of a zener. It was this understanding that i asked the question originaly before I went and smoked the VEMS ;D

The reply i got was that the transient surpression diode supplied in the rescue kit would work in either direction. The cathode/ anode ident was not what i would call clearly marked on this diode and posted a picture, the one you see below.

Please can some one tell me if this is installed the correct way and or that it really does not matter.

The 30V transient voltage suppresion diode that you have there is bi-directional.
Its function is described quite nicely here:
