Lotus Esprit fitted with Audi 4.2 V8 (ABZ)
« on: August 20, 2007, 09:40:36 am »
Hi all

Since the Smufinator has given the game away I though I had better post some details about by car.

It is a 1981 Lotus Esprit S3.
I have taken out the 2.2l 4pot Lotus engine and replaced it with an Audi 4.2l 32 valve all alloy V8 from an A8 (engine code ABZ) along with a 6 speed TDi gearbox.
I am running V3.3 fully sequential with COP.
I have only had the thing idling as I have yet to get the car finished enough to be able to drive it (only a couple of weeks away) so the configuration set up is still way off.

For more details have a look here as I have been running a build blog since I started the project

I just read all 11 pages of your terrific work. I've excited to see you drive it, and I hope you enjoy the fruits of your labor as much as I think you will. =]

One thing I saw that seemed odd was your solution to the radiator cap problem. Couldn't you have machined a new threaded hole that
would accept off-the-shelf caps, instead of making your own?

Oh well...

Congratulations on the work so far!

:O

11 whole pages of shiny things :)

Do you still have the old engine? I have a jensen GT that could do with a 2.2
it's not brown, it has theft deterrent paint

OK picture time

This is the car.

This is the engine and gearbox.

Here are the 2 mashed together.

The VEMS PCB is fitted to a custom case so I could retain the Audi engine loom connectors.
The extra PCB is to buffer the ignition drive signal to utilise the Audi COP drivers.

Just to prove VEMS really is as good as people say, here is a video if it in action, well of my car running anyhow.

The weather was pretty damp so first gear just span the tyres, I got wheel spin in second gear as well, but you get the idea.

I'm surprised it sounds like that. Not your typical V8, that's for sure. It sounds very intoxicating. =]
Well done!

I just read Audi puts flat plane V-8s in their R and RS cars. How about your motor?
