serial adapter
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:58:03 pm »
im looking for a new serial adapter for use with vems & my laptop, as my laptop does not have an old style rs-232 interface, and my usb-serial cable has just given up on me.

Been looking at PCMCIA to rs-232 adapters, but i can find any that work with windows 7.

Anyone use one of these and is the connection to vems ok, before i buy one.

other options are serial to bluetooth, but this would need to be powered somehow.

options welcome.

thanks

scott

I chose an FTDI adapter after seeing the previous issues with the Prolific. I suppose either has its downfalls, but I wanted something I could trust from the UK manufacturer, rather than these cheapo Chinese adapters you can pick up for next to nothing.

I haven´t had any problems with a Prolific adapter for 2years now I think, since we where actually having communications problems.

i was thinking along this lines next time, instead of usb cable to serial.

http://www.dynamode.net/english/pages/product/Datacom%20Products/PCMCIA%20Cards/LC232RS.html

at only £20-24 its not bad, and should be a good make, better than ebay stuff from china maybe.

cheers

I haven't had problems with Prolific adapters, only used them with Lenove laptops (Intel chipset) and Windows XP. Main thing is to download the latest drivers from www.prolific.com.tw before using the adapter, always.

Just ordered a new usb-serial cable via the vems shop, should be here sometime next week.

Uses the prolific chipset so should be ok.

so got my new serial-usb lead as purchased from the VEMS shop last week, yesterday.....

and i have the same issue....."cannot leave boot mode".....

And doesn't always connect everytime, proberly worse than my last serial-usb cable.

So now i think it must be a ECU problem, tried 3 laptops, with different windows versions, tried older & newer cable drivers, tried all the settings in vemstune.

is it possible to test it any other way, as i am really out of options.

cheers

I had similar issue with 1.2.0. Downgrade to 1.1.96 solved the situation.

uploaded v1.1.95 this morning and car running suprisingly well...

But i still have the same issue using the serial-usb cable.

Now i have also noticed that i cannot read the sd card, and my LCD is showing garbage characters when i try to read it.

I can remove the card and read it normally using the image function, so its working fine.

Using v1.1.95 now makes my GPS work again also.....this doesnt work in anything above this version.

So looks like my ecu is suspect.....need to have it tested somehow.

cheers
