PEUGEOT XU9J4 (D6C) MI-16 primary trigger's settings
« on: May 18, 2011, 08:09:05 am »
Hello! I have engine XU9J4 (D6C) MI-16 + BE3 gearbox. How can help me? I need correct primary trigger's settings (First trigger Tooth & TDC After The Trigger).
Is first trigger tooth=9 & TDC after the trigger=60 correct? Or maybe first trigger tooth=8 & TDC after the trigger = 60?
Board v3.7, fw 1.1.88

Set up a timing light and verify where you are.

Easiest on the starter is if you unscrew all the spark plugs, connect them with copper wire to ground (wind wire around the threads) and connect them to spark plug leads or ignition coils. That way you get a high starter rpm and can more easily see with the timing light.

Never power the injectors (remove connectors from injector) until you know where your ignition timing is.

Are you running wasted spark, distributor or separate coils (COP) ?

I use wasted spark. I understend, that i must on only first cilinder ignition & set crank advance to 0 & set cranking thresold higher. 1000 for example. I think, that sombody use vems allready on peugeot's engine, that is why I have asked my qestion. But thanks for replay & sorry my English. :)

Set the cranking threshold to 400 rpm, that should be enough when you get the engine running and for strobing with a timing light with no plugs (rpm rarely goes above 300 rpm without plugs anyway).
Your english is perfectly understandable. ;)

I measured the TDC point (tool - micrometer) in my T16 (the same flywhell as in mi16) engine and calculate that TDC point is about 122-123 degress after trigger.

it is very easy to strobe the car and line up the timing marks... just lock ignition to .25 bc if you put 0 that disables locked ignition and lets it run on the ignition map

tools--> Ignition Lock. set at .25

then adjust your tdc after the trigger until marks line up..

obviously if you use a different trigger tooth then another your tdc will be off.

The TDC mark if correctly at TDC will always come up right no matter what your trigger distance and tooth count are.

As in a 60 tooth wheel then each tooth is 6 degrees.
So if you have 60 degrees as the distance from TDC and 3 teeth as the first trigger this means

78 degrees actual total distance

this is the same as doing

78 degrees distance and 0 teeth as the first trigger tooth.

Or
72 and 1
66 and 2

and so on.

Only early version XU9 engine have TDC mark - Mi16 no longer have.
