Problem with MAT & CLT sensors
« on: March 30, 2011, 12:04:23 am »
Yes, another new topic from me :-\ I am quite sorry for this but it seems that I can't get this one sorted by myself also  >:(

The problem: Sensors aren't giving the right readings. MAT reads +21C when the car hasn't ran for 24h and outside temp is 0 :D CLT reads +3...4 That one I almost could believe.

The problem started a few months ago when updateing FW the computer crashed. When I finally updated to FW 1.1.85 the temp readings were wrong. Since then I've reinstalled the FW two times with new temp patches - but no change there   ???

I've also tried to import new patches inside Vemstune but it woun't work. An error window reads that I don't have the required FW installed - well I have and I also reintalled it - and nothing, still same error.

The car's an Audi S2 with a 3B engine - still using the original sensors.
When reflashing the ECU with new temp patches I chose for MAT 425_260 and for CLT 1900_256 the ones suggested for best use with those sensors.

What to do now? Should I try importing new patches? But how? This, at the moment, is the last problem holding the car in the garage :D

You have another possibility among FW patches: adjustable temperature sensor curves. But it require some labour time.

But is there a way I could upload different patches to try them out?

No, just a stupid one. I am unable to upload/import new sensor patches into the FW without reflashing the ECU. Am I doing it wrong? I would like to try new patches because the mentioned ones don't work for me  :(

A firmware upload is the only way to "patch" with new sensor calibration data.
As mentioned, you can design your own curve too. The PTC sensor on the Audi has no default curve for that, only patch file.

Sorry GintsK, I always forget  :-[ I am using FW 1.1.85

If I want to import another air factor file then VemsTune always gives me a warning:

"Descriptor file has not been found for firmware. This means......"

But I have the FW installed, I can't get this sorted out  ???

Today I made myself temporary 17point curves for both sensor because those show me more reliable values at the moment :S But this isn't right!  >:(

Import? When, what, how ?

Are you using the regular firmware upload dialog?

Heh, my stupidity  ;D

Til now I always thought that the button named "import" below every window that You open in Vemstune lets You import different setting files. I thought that I could change the temp factor files like that but my bad :-[
As I found out yesterday night - that button is for importing values from another config file ONLY. That it cannot be used as I wanted  :(

So the only way for me to find the right temp factor files is to measure my sensors in atleast 2 points and then pick out the right factor file?

Keep track of what patch files you have used, you have already made a few attempts - these should have been written down with their results, I usually do it that way. Remember that PTC is opposite of NTC, temperature goes up with increasing resistance with PTC.

Personally I think you are much better of by extending the wiring and mounting an NTC sensor in the intake pipe before the throttle, or thread the hole where the stock PTC sensor is mounted and put the webshop NTC sensor there.  It all requires that you fix the resistance on the A/D input for the sensor, since it's much lower for PTC than NTC.
You only need to remove the endplate for this modification :
http://www.vems.hu/wiki/index.php?page=MembersPage%2FMarcSwanson%2FMotronicAirTempMod
There's a "511" resistor piggybacked on top of a 2k7 resistor, just remove the top "511" and you're done.

Did I get this right now - the only way to try different temp factor files is to change/upload them with the FW?

 :(

BUT wouldn't this "trial & error" cause harm to the ECU in long term. I mean that let's say maybe I'll get the right temp factor file in on a 50'th try. Can't this affect it badly? Just asking  :)

Ofcourse I'll sit town and try to make some sence of it all before I'll just start trying  8)
