wiring only for changing firmware/configs
« on: March 28, 2011, 03:20:24 pm »
Hi, I am trying to make a wiring harness only for changing firmware/configs (V3.6) on bench.

My first thought was to connect:

EC36-25 12V+
EC36-5,21,22,26,32 together for grounding

EC18-14 DSUB9 pin 3
EC18-15 DSUB9 pin 2
and pin 5 for grounding

Power supply would be a common 12V A/C adapter (5A)

Did I miss anything?

Thanks

Thats it. Use some high quality AC adapter, cause you don't want anything to go wrong in the middle of fw upload...

I use my PC's power supply, connected with grounds to 26 and 5 (no need to connect the other power grounds as you will not be drawing any significant current).

I use test harness I made for that purpose, with iat, clt, map, tps and WBO2 connectors and LEDs for p259, all gnds and AC adapter i've got with BDM100 if not calibrating WBO2, or 10A lab power supply otherwise. PC power supply is surely good for this.

Now I did the test with the wiring as above, but VEMS-TUNE told me: can not open port. I used the ECU communication menue with the detect-option, but no responce on any port. Next I will connect the LCD to see if the VEMS unit is powering up, it`s a brand new one.

powering up with the LCD connected...the display stays dark. I am now using a more trustable power supply, but no luck with this one too. Avoiding to send the unit back, I´m now thinking to take a look inside. Are there fuses to change? What can I do?

thanks for helping

Its not up to vems. You cannot open com port. Open device manager and see which com port is available. If you use USB2RS232 make sure it's properly installed and one of "trusted" devices. It's best to use devices based on ftdi chip.

I`m hoping you are right, but I`m using an older Laptop (Win XP) with serial port, which works fine with other programs on this port. I`m using the latest VEMSTune and the first popup window is always cannot open port. It is still a mystery to me........

If it is up vems, VT would complain "device cannot connect", and not "cannot open port"... Could you try on another pc?

I`m not the only one with a port problem using latest VT-version, see bugreport on VEMS homepage: ErrorReport-2011.03.27-19.47.30. I`ll put an old version back on to see what happens ;)

Finally I got the chance to test my new unit in a running car...and everything was just fine. With latest VT-version no problems. Sorry for making panic. Now it`s on me to get my Benchtest-wiring running. I`ll report again when I get it working. Thanks for helping.

I`m mortified, I mixed up RS232 pin2 with pin3, so everything on bench is now under control, except I need bigger glasses ;)
