A proper way of hooking up a new system is to begin with all things un-powered. Begin by calibrating all sensors (temperature, TPS, lambda, ..) and verify that the trigger works (you get rpm, and make a triggerlog while you're at it). Then power the ignition coil(s) and roughly check the timing with a strobe light and adjust the trigger settings. Now the injectors can be powered.
I would also first use a DVM to measure the pins, proper grounding and sensor readings.. it might require a bit more knowledge about how this stuff works but it's simple enough to notice if there is voltage where there shouldn't be any when all things are un-powered (fuses or connectors removed).
