I had very similar setup at the time I bought my BMW.
Building boost was never an issue with the TD04, even at 2000rpm it could build 0.5 bars or 1 bars or anything I set.
-Actually it was hard to set, because of permanent boost creep. Previous owner even drilled a ~15mm hole next to the internal wastegate, without real success  ;D

It never dropped the boost at high rpm with that glowing red "plug" on the exhaust side, but power level was close (or below) the stock n/a engine.

Yes,power lever is really bad if you ask me....I think this turbo is choking the engine, more then its helping.Only think is that its fun to drive in city,1bar@2000rpm LOL :)

We went yesterday and bought HX35 with 16cm2,ordered intercooler,63lb Siemens injectors.....there will be some winter fun in the garage!

I have this turbo on project with M40 1.8L 8V engine. Deep w-gate problems. No way to keep 0.7bar boost over all range. So we decided to put external w-gate.

Do not knew is it exactly td04: turbo comes from BMW 6cyl diesel. Today we got ~205hp @5100.At higher rpms power drops. Boost reach 0.9bar @3500. This turbo is crap!

In our case it is super cheep project using close at hand parts. Many parts cost nothing. Also turbo. Gain is good enough for M40 1.8L engine. Now we have 320Nm, 205hp. On completely standard engine. Using OE manifolds with just adapter to turbo, pumpfuel/e85 50/50 blend.

But mount this turbo on m30b35... IMHO not good idea. Two such turbos might work. But one is just power limiter/choke for that engine.

320nm/205hp is very nice for m40,must be fun to drive.

:) yes it feels strong.
But modified n/a M20 gives same power....probably for more cost.

we still have possibility to spend little money for another cheap turbo. almost any turbo should be better than this.

Car updated with HX35 16cm2,OMG what a good turbo is that :) looks like a big deference from my H1C with 18cm2....
We experienced problems with Audi S2 wastegate,it looks like its too small....even when it opens at ~0.3bar turbo easily raises up the boos up to 1bar where we have fuel cut....
