Vems V3 harness? braided sleeving? or heat shrink?
« on: February 23, 2010, 08:09:06 am »
It's really hard to tell if the vems V3 harness is braided sleeving or heat shrink tubing.   If it's braided sleeving is it high quality stuff?

Thanks
josh

It's mainly plastic sleeving, and heat shrink tubing where necessary.
The same factory manufactures original Audi/VW harnesses.

When has braided sleeving been an indication of high quality?
It just lets dirt and moisture right through.

The braided sleeving i'm using is awesome and I can cut it with my handy long cut shears:

Braided from heat-treated fiberglass and
coated with high-temperature resins, this sleeving
resists abrasion, chemicals, solvents, and
oil. Temp. range is –94° to +1200° F

This is the first harness i've ever made and it's going ok.  I was going to have the injector harness have a metripack connector on it but I've since changed my mind and removed the connectors.   I think I might end up using a bulkhead connector on this harness setup:

It's a bit intimidating at first making my own harness.    I've done a few engine swaps now and know how to read schematics very well but to have the freedom to do what you want to some degree and all the options out there.   I'm building confidence with this harness that i'm building everyday and realize it's probably going to be nice.   It's just having the patience to do it and to a degree where I think i'll be satisfied with it.   I asked about the vems harness because I was debating a bunch of things.   It's nice to know all the options out there but for now I suspect i'll stick with making my own harness.   One thing I've learned is not to use the expensive heat shrink until i'm done with it or committed to it.  I've undone it a few times now to either remove or add things or change them around.

When you say "braided sleeving" it can mean a bunch of different things. Your kind is not only braided, it's an insulator inside too which makes it have double functions and probably at a higher cost. Depending on the environment you're using it in it can probably be worthwhile but requires careful planning if you're building "one off" harnesses.

I was thinking the cheap braided plastic sleeving that really only protects against abrasion and looks neat.

I buy it from www.mcmaster.com.  The best website on the internet in the USA in my opinion.    I deal with them at least once a week for multiple weird things.

hey, i sent you a PM, but i figured I'd ask here too.

would you be interested in building an ABZ harness for me, or modifying my stock ABZ harness for use w/VEMS?

Does this sleeving expand large enough to slide over the connectors? Or did you have to feed wire through and install connectors and plugs after?

I feed the wires through it.  It expands but not that much.    Also the smallest it comes is in 3/8" so as far as using it with a few wires it will probably be to big.   I use it for multiple wire applications and stick with heat shrink or the factory audi covering when there is not alot of wires to put inside of it.
